In terms of residential ownership rate, according to statistics, 49% of poor households in the United States own their own homes, with an average of three rooms per household, including a living room, reception room, kitchen, and dining room. The homes are equipped with an average of 1.5 bathrooms.

According to statistics from the US Department of Energy, the average living area of American households ranks first among all Western countries, with an average living space of 721 square feet per person. In contrast, poor American households have an average living space of 493 square feet per person. It can be said that the gap in living area between poor and ordinary people is not particularly large. Among poor American households that own homes, 49% of households own independent homes, 41% of households own apartments, and 10% of households own mobile homes.

How can poor Americans afford to live in a house?

01. The standards for poor people in the United States are a bit high

Firstly, poor people in the United States are naturally classified as poor by American society. According to important media reports, in the highly developed United States, the standard for poor people is much higher than the United Nations' poverty income standard of $693.5, which is more than 20 times higher in terms of income. Therefore, more people are classified as poor.

02. US housing prices

The housing prices in the United States are related to population distribution and have a large price difference. The housing prices in New York and surrounding cities in the East West region, as well as California cities such as Los Angeles, are relatively expensive, while the housing prices in the surrounding areas are relatively cheap. In terms of overall housing prices in the United States, the median price is around $200000, with most houses in the central region priced at less than $200000.

A Chinese immigrant friend once talked about the housing prices in two central cities in the United States, Detroit and Kansas City. In terms of population, these two cities rank between 10-50 in the United States and can be considered second tier cities. However, they have a population of less than one million and affordable housing prices. A residential property costs only a few tens of thousands of dollars, or even less than one hundred thousand dollars. A house worth just over two hundred thousand dollars is already a good one. Almost everyone in the United States owns a car, so everyone's living range has expanded a lot, and there are also many choices for poor people when buying a house.

03. Housing purchase policies and mortgage interest rates

The mortgage interest rates in the United States are low, far lower than those of ordinary commercial loans and credit cards. For the first house loan of Americans, the down payment can be as low as 3.5%, or even lower! And now the median house price in the United States is about $200000, so you can buy a house with a down payment of $7000!

Secondly, the interest on housing loans can be tax deductible, which is a very tempting discount! If taxpayers have bought a house or applied for a heavy loan in the past few years, they should have a higher proportion of monthly mortgage repayment as mortgage interest, thus saving more taxes.

04. Cost and Security of Housing Expenses

Housing insurance services

It is possible to buy insurance for a house in the United States! For example, in some areas, there may be unforeseeable natural disasters such as typhoons and floods. If you are willing, you can purchase home insurance, and in case of a natural disaster, you will receive good compensation.

Courtyard maintenance expenses

Courtyard maintenance requires money, such as building branches and leveling lawns, but as long as you don't slack off, you can actually do it yourself.

Community expenses

If the real estate you buy in the United States has community management, there will be a community fee, which depends on the number of public facilities in the community.

05. Housing subsidies and welfare guarantees

The US federal government provides housing subsidies to the poor in many different ways.

Elderly low-income individuals can move into senior apartments, while low-income individuals who wish to buy a house can apply to purchase limited price housing.

For low-income families who cannot afford rent, there is a housing subsidy program.

Commonly known as Section 8, this subsidy program operates in accordance with the provisions of Section 8 of the Housing Act and subsequent supplemental regulations. Section 8 is the Eighth Housing Subsidy Program, originally the U.S. Occupancy Act of 1937, which has been repeatedly modified and supplemented. It authorizes subsidies to be issued to private apartment owners or low-income individuals to help low-income families afford to rent. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is the federal agency specifically responsible for the operation of low-income subsidies.

The so-called low-income individuals, according to the definition of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, are those whose income is less than 30% of the local median income. Public housing agencies will conduct strict investigations on applicants, including household income, property, criminal records, and so on. Families that pass the investigation can be included in the waiting list.

These subsidies are mainly divided into three categories:

The first category: It can be used by the subsidized person to rent a house or pay the monthly payment for buying a house (currently, $17 billion is used annually for this project in the United States, and the maximum limit for this voucher is $2200 per month)

Category 2: Suitable for renters. Based on tenants, beneficiaries can freely choose their residential area and type of lease. Rent subsidies are directly paid to homeowners by local housing public institutions, while the remaining rent is paid directly to homeowners by tenants. Of course, there is a limit to the rent of the rented property, which is generally set based on the local average level.

The third category: suitable for renters. Based on housing, the subsidy recipient can only use the subsidy to rent designated housing. The government has agreed in advance with the landlord to use the landlord's house as a subsidized housing and rent it out to families who receive housing subsidies. Similarly, renters need to pay no more than 30% of their income as part of the rent, and the government will cover the shortfall. For example, if the monthly income is 2000 yuan, they will pay 600 yuan.

If the house is bought by oneself, then it is treated equally, with 30% of income paid for monthly payments. Due to the housing subsidy program, low-income families can easily find suitable houses, so it is very popular. Currently, about 3 million households are benefiting from this policy. In addition to the federal government's rental subsidy program, various regions also have their own housing subsidy programs!

The American version of the poor in terms of housing: 49% of households own independent homes, 41% of households own apartments, and 10% of households own mobile homes. The American version of the poor in cars: everyone has a car, and every family has a few cars. This is the American version of the poor~
